Silicosis Claims

Silicosis is a type of pulmonary fibrosis in the lungs caused by inhalation of crystalline silica dust (also known as quartz). This is the dust that is released into the air when certain materials such as rock, stone, sand and clay are cut or crushed. Workers who experience pro-longed and heavy exposure to crystalline silica dust can develop silicosis and can also be at an increased risk of developing lung cancer and other serious diseases.

There are other types of pulmonary fibrosis such as asbestosis, caused by asbestos exposure. Therefore, it is important to instruct an experienced solicitor who is familiar with the different conditions and has experience in dealing with the specific challenges associated with these types of claims.

Where might I have been exposed to crystalline silica dust?

The most common industries at risk are:

  • Quarries
  • Mines
  • Glass manufacturing
  • Stone masonry
  • Construction (exposure to concrete or paving materials)
  • Steel works
  • Farming

We have a specialist team who are experienced in dealing with different types of fibrosis claims; including asbestosis and silicosis claims. As a result, we are highly experienced at investigating these types of claims, tracking down the responsible party (even where the employer company no longer exists) and dealing with complex and difficult cases.

What is silicosis?

Silicosis is a benign condition affecting the respiratory system. It is a type of pulmonary fibrosis caused by exposure to crystalline silica dust. Over time inhalation of silica dust can cause swelling and a build-up of scar tissue in the lungs making it difficult to breath. Silicosis can have a severe effect on day to day life and can put you at a higher risk of developing other disabling conditions.

What are the symptoms?

The most common symptoms of silicosis are:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Persistent cough
  • Production of sputum
  • Fatigue and weakness

Should I make a claim?

In order to prove in law that a person’s pulmonary fibrosis is caused by exposure to crystalline silica dust (and is, therefore, silicosis) it is necessary to show that the person suffering had a history of moderate to heavy exposure. Therefore, demonstrating a clear history of exposure is required for these types claims – we can assist you with this.

Receiving a diagnosis such as silicosis or any other related disease can be difficult. Compensation in these claims helps our clients and their families to live as full a life as possible after their diagnosis. It may also allow you to access alternative treatments that are not available on the NHS.

The legal costs in these cases are recoverable from the responsible party. We will pursue the claim under an agreement with you commonly known as a “no win no fee” agreement.
